Fixing the Health Crisis in Vocational Driving: A Win for Everyone

With 99% of vocational drivers being male and having some of the worst health outcomes of any industry we have voiced our concerns and advocated for more help and support for our UK drivers by contributing to the Government’s call for evidence for its Men’s Health Strategy for England.

It is so important that we use every opportunity to highlight the health inequalities in the industry and that we are stakeholders in improving outcomes. Whilst the health of drivers may not be top on the industry or operators’ agenda it is essential to keeping the industry moving.

Win-Win-Win

Win 1: Road safety increases immediately – the unhealthier the driver the greater the risk of a collision and the greater the risk of a serious collision; and by the way workforce productivity and attendance improve commercial outputs.

Win 2: Better screening means common conditions such as diabetes and heart disease are detected and treated much earlier – saving and prolonging lives.

Win 3: By tackling health issues early, the cost to the country (and, let’s face it, the tax paying people and companies) of disease management and long-term care is also hugely reduced.

Areas of focus for the survey

  • Understanding and identifying areas where we can improve support for healthier behaviours
  • Improving outcomes for health conditions that typically, disproportionately or differently affect men
  • Improving men’s access, engagement and experience of the health service

It’s essential that men can access the care they need when they need it. However, if services don’t consider the specific needs of those most at risk, they risk deepening existing inequalities. Factors such as lack of transport, language barriers, or inflexible service models can prevent men – especially those in greatest need – from accessing quality healthcare. They are particularly interested in understanding the different challenges and disparities men face in both accessing and experiencing healthcare services.
